information
Opened in 1877 the main entrance and Sexton's Lodge are located at the Southern corner of the site, near to the centre of town and the busy 'Cemetery Junction'. A wide carriageway curves Northwards to the centrally located chapel. The chapel was designed by Christopher Crabbe Creek (the Town Surveyor in 1877). The design includes some impressive inset figural sculpture not common in earlier cemetery chapels and the stonework was refurbished during 1993. Grave plots run parallel to the main East-West Carriageway rather than the site boundaries. Often modern grave plots can be found where there was previously a perimeter pathway. The cemetery has a particularly well preserved range of late Victorian planting with an avenue of monkey puzzle trees and varigated hollies. A number of Chilean Pines on the pathway to the chapel were damaged during 1990 and have been replaced. The boundary is marked with a metre high brick wall topped by a fence and planted with hollies. There is evidence that there were originally iron railings above the brickwork. The site has little variation in ground level. There are some interesting examples of grave sculpture including several large and intricate carved figures from the 1920s and 1930s in the Northern section.
