Protestant and War Cemeteries, Rome - nearest metro station Piramide Both cemeteries are located near to the Ancient Roman 3rd Century Aurelian Wall. The War Cemetery is pleasent, neatly kept, surrounded by trees and laid out with a large central lawn containing rows of military graves. The cemetery contains the graves of Allied soldiers and airmen from the Second World War. The Protestant Cemetery / Cimitero Acattolico is a cemetery for non-Catholics set aside as a burial ground in 1738. Those buried here include many English, Jews and Orthodox Christians who were either living in or visiting Rome at the time of their death. The cemetery is the resting place of Keats and Shelley and of Gramsci, the founder of Italian Marxism. The cemetery has a very peaceful feel, cut off from the city and planted with flowering trees and shrubs. The older section contains the Caius Cestium Pyramid and gravestones are of a simpler design. The newer section is laid out in grid form with many stone tombs, vaults and impressive sculptue. One of the most memorable features of the cemetery is the large collection of cats, thought to have sheltered there since it's opening. The cemetery povides a safe environment for a growing population of abandoned cats taken care of by public donations.
